Vito

1st September 2004 - 11th September 2007

Vito came to me in January 2007, at 28 months old. He came from Cavy Rescue - an organisation who despite the name are rehoming more rats each year! Vito is a chocolate self rat, with very cute white paws. He is very worried about being handled, but he is gradually getting used to me. You can see just how worried he was to begin with in the first few photos taken soon after he arrived (below).

Vito was also very worried about other rats and although he had previous been living with other rats he had been split from them at the rescue due to fighting with them. I decided Balderdash and Piffle were probably non-threatening enough for him to spend some free-time with, and he took to them quite well.

Vito got full-time friends in the form of Ebenezer and Steve, although Ebenezer sadly died soon after due to kidney failure. Steve and Vito continue to cohabit very happily (photos May 2007).

Aged 35 months: Vito still lives with Steve, and now also Pie, who is a mere 31 months, and the youngsters Skregget, Squid and Pattertwig. He rules with an iron paw, but typically all 6 are in the same hammock every morning, so I reckon they're pretty happy.

Towards the end of his life Vito was slowing down a lot, and he moved into a retirement cage with his best friend Steve. He died peacefully in his igloo on the evening of 11th September 2007.
